The Role of Learning in Business Resilience Strategy

The Role of Learning in Business Resilience Strategy
Kathleen Bosworth

What an increasingly unpredictable world we live in.  I used to think it was just my own experience—this sense of increasing uncertainty.  The World Economic Forum (WEF) confirms it. The overall message of the WEF Global Risks Report 2025 is that while global risks have always existed, there is a convergence of multiple long-term forces that is amplifying both the complexity and urgency of today’s challenges. Some of these forces include geopolitical tensions (even more heightened since the release of the report in January 2025), climate change, technological acceleration, and demographic shifts.

Some of the recommendations from the report for businesses is to build adaptive workforces through upskilling and have more resilient operations across talent and compliance.

An adaptive workforce has become one of the most valuable assets a company can have. For small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs), this adaptability isn’t just a nice-to-have—it’s a imperative. While larger enterprises may have deeper pockets and more infrastructure to weather economic shocks, SMBs often have fewer buffers and fewer places to hide. That’s why continuous learning—at both the individual and organisational level—needs to be at the core of every SMB’s resilience strategy.

Learning = Agility

Markets shift. Technology evolves. Customer needs change. And in many cases, these changes come faster than ever before as stated in the WEF Global Risks Report 2025.

Businesses that invest in ongoing learning and development are better equipped to:

  • Recognise and respond to change in real-time
  • Upskill their workforce to take on new challenges or roles
  • Innovate processes and reimagine service delivery and
  • Maintain productivity even in the face of disruption

The result? A team that can pivot—because they’re not just doing a job, they’re growing with it.

Why SMBs Must Prioritise Learning

SMBs typically don’t have large HR departments or extensive learning budgets, which can make structured learning programs seem out of reach. But the cost of inaction is higher.

If employees aren’t learning, your business is likely standing still while others move forward. In a competitive and volatile market, that’s not a neutral position—it’s a losing one.

Here’s what learning looks like in resilient SMBs:

  • Cross-training to prevent single points of failure
  • Quick, targeted microlearning to keep teams current
  • Peer-to-peer knowledge sharing to maximise internal expertise
  • Accessible learning platforms that support self-directed growth

Embedding Learning into the Business Fabric

Business resilience doesn’t happen through a single course or a once-a-year workshop. It requires a culture of learning where improvement is part of the daily workflow.

This means giving managers tools to:

  • Coach and support employee development
  • Align learning with business goals
  • Track progress and identify skill gaps

It also means giving employees a clear path to grow—because when people feel they are developing, they are more engaged, motivated, and ready to meet change head-on.

Business resilience is not just about survival—it’s about strategic growth. For SMBs, investing in learning may be the most cost-effective way to build a business that’s not only responsive but future-ready.

Success isn’t about avoiding disruption—it’s about being ready for it. Make learning your team’s superpower.
