Practical Skills Assessments

Practical Skills Assessments

Verify Workforce Capability with Evidence-Based Assessments

WorkPlan Learning enables authorised assessors, managers and supervisors to conduct practical skills assessments, record results and retain supporting evidence within the learner’s workforce record.

Assessments can be completed in the workplace, on site or as part of a structured capability development process, giving organisations a clearer and more defensible picture of workforce readiness.

Practical skills assessments

Practical skills assessments allow these capabilities to be observed and formally recorded.

  • Operate equipment correctly
  • Follow an approved procedure
  • Respond appropriately to a workplace situation
  • Apply required safety controls
  • Communicate effectively with customers or colleagues
  • Perform work to an established quality standard

Assessments can be aligned with job roles, competency frameworks, learning pathways, organisational procedures or project requirements.

Capture Supporting Evidence

Assessment records can include evidence that supports the decision made by the assessor.

Depending on the assessment and your organisation’s requirements, evidence may include:

  • More than 20 question types with categories, subcategories, question branching, response point values
  • Any type of document upload
  • Instant screen or video capture
  • Graded or ungraded assessment
  • Marking and Feedback
Supporting Australian organisations across regulated industries with integrated workforce compliance, capability management and audit-ready reporting.

Integrated Within Learning and Job Role Requirements

Practical skills assessments are integrated into learning and role requirements, allowing organisations to combine learning, workplace activities and competency verification within a single structured program or pathway.

Where further development is required, additional learning, coaching or reassessment can be incorporated, providing a structured pathway from learning through to demonstrated workplace competence.

Strengthen Audit Readiness

During an audit, organisations may need to demonstrate more than course completion.

Audits may need to show:

  • How competency was assessed
  • Who completed the assessment
  • When it occurred
  • Which criteria were used
  • What evidence supported the outcome
  • Whether deficiencies were identified
  • What action was taken afterward

Maintaining structured practical assessment records provides a stronger audit trail than relying only on training certificates.

How Do Practical Skills Assessments Work?

1. Define the Required Capability

Identify the task, behaviour, skill or competency standard the individual must demonstrate. Requirements may be linked to a job role, qualification, procedure or organisational capability framework.

2. Establish the Assessment Criteria

Define what successful performance looks like. Assessment criteria should clearly describe the behaviours, actions or outcomes the assessor needs to observe.

3. Assign the Assessment

Assign the practical assessment to the appropriate employee or contractor based on their role, team, project, location or learning pathway.

4. Observe Workplace Performance

An authorised assessor observes the individual completing the task in the workplace or another suitable environment to determine whether the required standard has been met.

5. Record the Assessment Outcome

The assessor records the assessment result, comments and any recommendations directly within the learner’s record.

6. Attach Supporting Evidence

Supporting evidence such as photographs, documents, checklists, certificates or observations can be attached to strengthen the assessment record.

7. Address Capability Gaps

Where competency has not yet been demonstrated, additional learning, coaching, supervised practice or reassessment can be assigned.

8. Monitor and Report

Managers and administrators can monitor assessment completion, competency status, evidence submitted and outstanding actions through reporting dashboards.

Verify Capability

WorkPlan Learning helps organisations assess practical workplace skills, retain supporting evidence and maintain a clearer record of workforce capability.

By connecting assessment outcomes with learning, development and compliance reporting, organisations can move beyond course completion and demonstrate that their people are genuinely ready to perform the work required.

Frequently Asked Questions

Expand the questions for answers regarding managing compliance.

What is a practical skills assessment?

A practical skills assessment is a structured evaluation of a person’s ability to perform a workplace task or demonstrate a required behaviour. It normally involves observation by an authorised assessor and may include supporting evidence.

Can practical competency be assessed online?

The administration and recording of an assessment can be managed online, while the practical demonstration usually occurs in the workplace, on site or through another appropriate observation process.

Who can assess an employee’s practical skills?

Assessments may be completed by authorised managers, supervisors, workplace assessors, subject-matter experts or other nominated people, depending on the organisation’s requirements.

Can contractors be assessed?

Yes. Practical skills assessments can be used for employees, contractors and other workforce members where competency must be verified.

Can evidence be attached to an assessment?

Yes. Supporting documents, images, certificates, comments and other relevant files can be retained with the assessment record.

What happens when someone is not yet competent?

The assessor can record the outcome and identify required follow-up, such as further training, coaching, supervised practice, additional evidence or reassessment.

Is passing an online quiz a competency assessment?

An online quiz can test knowledge, but it does not normally confirm that a person can apply that knowledge in a practical workplace setting. Practical competency generally requires observation or other suitable performance evidence.

How does WorkPlan reduce compliance administration?

WorkPlan reduces manual administration by automating the assignment of compliance requirements, monitoring completion status, tracking licence and qualification renewals, sending automated reminders and providing centralised reporting. Managers and administrators gain visibility of outstanding actions through dashboards rather than relying on spreadsheets, emails and manual follow-up, allowing more time to focus on workforce capability and operational improvement.
