WorkPlan brings you a 5-part series on the questions you should ask to create a perfect strategy. In part 5, we explore the last question: what management systems do we need?
Welcome to the final part of this 5-part series where we explore the 5 Question model. In this part, we will be exploring the question ‘what management systems do we need?’. In part 4, we explored how to identify what capabilities you would need to achieve your business strategy. By this point, you should have a clear direction for your business strategy; part 5 will tie everything together and give you the knowledge to move forward with your business strategy.
What management systems do we need?
This final question should tie together all your answers to questions 1-4. Here you should evaluate what systems you need to put in place to achieve your business strategy.
Another way to ask this question is “what management systems are necessary to operate to build and maintain the key capabilities?”
In this step, you may audit your existing systems to test if they are serving the business strategy that you have been developing with the previous 4 questions. This may reveal only minor tweaks to optimise your business systems or a complete overhaul of certain systems.
You should start by documenting the process visually. A great place to start is on a whiteboard or a large sheet of paper, and make sure you capture this and transfer your work to a digital medium for further work.
What business systems should you look at to get started?
Management systems include processes, structures and rules that build capability and support, and reinforce and measure the firm’s strategic choices.
Below are some of the systems and processes that you can audit/evaluate to help you get started with question 5. For a more comprehensive list, check our e-book.
