Build a self-directed learning culture with your LMS.

Build a self-directed learning culture with your LMS.
Brian Clark

WorkPlan Learning LMS can be a powerful tool to promote a culture of self-directed learning. I have included some of the features in an LMS that will help you achieve self-directed learning on behalf of your people and organisational culture. This should be part of your overall learning strategy aligned with your organisational strategic goals.

  1. Personalized Learning Paths: Allow learners to choose their own courses and modules based on their personal interests, current projects and career goals. By offering this level of autonomy, you are encouraging people to have stewardship of ther learning and development.
  2. Flexible Access: Enable learners to access content anytime, anywhere. People will choose times when they are most able to focus on learning and knowledge that is of interest to them. WorkPlan Learning LMS also permits subject matter experts and thought leaders to create amazing content in the LMS and share across your organisation or to particular target audiences.
  3. Interactive Content: When you are creating content, use multi-media elements such as videos, surveys, discussions, learning journals and quizzes. These elelments will improve learning engagement and retention. When people are engaged in their learning, you are ensuring that the learning journey is self-driven
  4. Track Learning Progress: Use dashboards and analytics to track people and teams in their progress towards learning outcomes. Individuals should also have access to a dashboard to monitor their personal progress in their learning journey. WorkPlan Learning LMS also tracks learning progress linked to strategic goals and team objectives.
  5. Reflective Learning Activities: Leverage tools like learning journals, discussion forums, blogs and communities of practices to support learners wishing to reflect on their learning experiences and share insights and best practices with colleagues and peers. It has been our experience that formalising meetups for learners in different programs (onboarding, leadership, coaching etc.), goes a long way to engage learners and build this process into your learning culture.
  6. Feedback Channels: WorkPlan Learning LMS has a survey toolset that is perfect for creating automated quizzes and assessments to help people understand their strengths and areas of potential improvement. These feedback tools are used by many of our clients in leadership development programs, succession planning and performance management. We also included a star rating and text comments section at the end of the courses/portfolios.
  7. Resource Libraries: Use your LMS to create a knowledge hub that both supports the learning activities as well as providing tools, checklist and information that is relevant to your people and the organisation. Some examples include a copy of your organisational strategy, policy documents, mission statements, organisation history, position descriptions etc. In WorkPlan Learning LMS we encourage our clients to include a tracking mechanism to see who is accessing the resources and the topics of interest.

By leveraging these capabilities, your LMS is a strategic tool that will foster a culture of self-directed learning, empowering learners to take control of their learning and engage deeply in the process.
