Is lack of delegation holding your organisation back?
The 2023 report on the State of the Australian and New Zealand Workplace was clear:
Managers have the most significant impact on team engagement.
Employees today want a manager who can help them learn, grow and develop in their role and as a person. Today’s workplace requires that managers take a coaching approach to be the best manager.
Managers have key areas to concentrate on when adapting their methods to adopt a coaching-oriented style:
- Delegation
- People Development
- Team Leadership
- People Motivation
- Performance Development
- Resolving Conflict
- Team Culture
- Team Dynamics
Where do you begin and how do you get started? To transform yourself from a manger to a coach of your people? Or help the managers in your organisations to transform themselves into coaches?
First, you need to know the current level in terms of skills or knowledge in these key areas listed above. A survey tool will help identify areas of improvement and develop a plan to achieve the desired goals.
Let’s take a look at one of these key areas – Delegation.
“People and organizations don’t grow much without delegation…”
– Stephen Covey
Delegation is important for many reasons:
- It allows managers to focus on strategic planning.
- Delegation can actually make teams more productive.
- Delegation is intended to distribute workload.
- Delegation can aid in employee development.
Managers may hesitate to delegate tasks because they fear loss of control over the task. A common obstacle to delegation is doubt in the employee’s ability to complete the task well. Effective delegation matches tasks with employees based on skills and development potential.
Effective delegation also includes providing the necessary resources and support. Regular check-ins are better than waiting until the end and proactive support is better than waiting to be asked for help.
The task outcome, resources, and deadline should be defined clearly when a task is delegated. Keeping control without micromanaging can be achieved by setting clear milestones and providing autonomy in how to reach them. Empowering employees to make decisions within defined limits is the best approach to help maintain control without micromanaging.
